A dig at Trump and a plea for inclusion

The victor also responded to President Donald Trump's frequent mockery of his name and faith. El-Sayed suggested that after he takes the oath, Trump might begin addressing him as Senator. He spoke directly about the prejudice aimed at his Muslim background and appealed for every American to feel truly included in the nation's future.

Opponents, accusations and the campaign promise

El-Sayed triumphed over Republican Mike Rogers, who had received strong backing from Trump. He teased Rogers about earlier statements concerning retirement. Throughout the race Vance had labeled him a psychopath, while Trump claimed connections to the Muslim Brotherhood that PolitiFact rated as completely false. Reporters had pressed him on supposed extremist links. At 42, the candidate centered his platform on reducing everyday expenses, limiting corporate power in politics, and championing Medicare for All.
